The Newcomer Settlement Program (NSP) can help you find information on health care, schools, housing, banking, employment and much more. These services are open to newcomers, including Canadian citizens and refugee claimants.

The Newcomer Guide to Health and Social Services for the City of Mississauga provides information on local services, including resources for mental health and addictions, women’s health and wellness, early childhood, older adults’ and seniors’ health, 2SLGBTQ+ health, and more (employment, housing, income support, etc.). Access newcomer services online and connect with service providers online

The Government of Canada provides many services available through service providers across Canada. However, looking for the right settlement services for you and your family in a new country can be stressful. Compass to Connect is funded by IRCC to help you find services easily and connect with service providers from the comfort of your home. You will not need to visit service providers’ offices or their websites. Compass to Connect is already associated with the service provider organizations and will securely connect you with the service providers you choose. You can access over 60 IRCC-funded newcomer services from multiple service providers by visiting www.compasstoconnect.ca

If you do not speak English or French, you can select organizations which speak your preferred language of service within your preferred location. Your information will be securely sent to service providers that you wish to work with. Compass to Connect will connect you with as many service providers as you wish, all at once.

Emergency services and non-emergency services

When you have an emergency, you can telephone 9-1-1 free of charge. 9-1-1 will connect you to an ambulance, police or fire services to help you. You can dial 9-1-1 free from your home phone, cell phone or any public payphone.

What is an emergency?

An emergency is any situation where people are not safe and/or property is at risk and you need help immediately.

Examples of 9-1-1 emergencies are:

Multi-lingual 9-1-1 Service

If you do not speak English, translation services for over 140 languages are available through 9-1-1. Ask for service in your language if you cannot explain the situation in English, or if you cannot understand the call-taker.

Ambulance

Peel Region Paramedic Services provides ambulance service. If you have to take an ambulance to a hospital, you must pay a small fee.

Non-Emergency Services

211, 311 and 411 are non-emergency numbers that you can call for local information.

Call 2-1-1 for information and referral to community and social services. 211 is free, confidential, multilingual and available 24-hours a day.

311

Call 3-1-1 for information about municipal programs and services. 311 is free, multilingual and available during business hours. 311 is available in Peel Region (Mississauga and Brampton)

411

Call 4-1-1 for phone numbers and addresses for people and businesses. 411 is not free. The cost depends on your phone provider.

Employment services

Employment Ontario is a service of the Government of Ontario that offers a full range of employment services in a one-stop shop. Services include:

An assessment of your skills and experience
Developing effective job search strategies including resume preparation
Information about different careers and occupations
Local labour market, employment and training opportunities
Information about other community services and support.

The services are free

These services are free and can provide information on how to get a licence for your profession. You can also take part in special training programs and/or work experience that help you start a new career in Ontario.

A service counsellor will determine whether you need more individualized assistance and support to help you:

develop your career and set goals;
assess your skills and interests; and
prepare you for interviews and employment.

Peel newcomer information centres

The Peel Newcomer Information Centres (NIC) can help you with your transition to new life in Canada. At each NIC location, the friendly, multilingual staff will provide you with up-to-date information and can refer you to various programs and services in Peel Region.

The centres are usually open Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and appointments are not necessary. They may also have libraries and computer labs for your use.

Moreover, the Virtual Newcomer Information Centres (VNIC) provides broad online services including Employment Counselling, Settlement Information and access to Self-Serve Resource Centre for permanent residents and convention refugees.

Starting school

The Peel District School Board has Welcome Centres, and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board has Newcomer Reception and Assessment Centres in Brampton and Mississauga; to welcome your family to Peel and get your children registered for school. There is no fee for registration.

Settlement services

Settlement service organizations help newcomers adjust to a new life in Canada. They provide culturally sensitive programs and services in many languages and help you with all your needs during the process of settling into your new community.

Free and confidential

Settlement services are free, offered in many languages other than English (some centres have French speaking staff) and are always confidential. Some of the organizations may offer support services such as childminding and transportation assistance.
