II. Major Employers and Employment in the Region of Peel
The Region of Peel consists of the cities of Mississauga, Brampton, and the Town of Caledon. Peel has a wide range of employers in a wide range of areas (e.g. government, public institutions, large corporations, large retail shopping centres, and many small and medium-sized businesses). As of December 2007, there were at least 86,133 private sector business establishments in Peel. Of this:
- 14,530 businesses or approximately 17% of total business establishments were in the goods producing sector (e.g. construction and manufacturing)
- The remaining 71,603 businesses establishments or 83% were in the services sector (e.g., trade, transportation and warehousing, finance)
The 2 largest employers in Peel Region are the two School Boards: the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Each of these School Boards reports that it has approximately 10,000 employees.

- In 2007, the top three (3) occupations of Peel residents were: clerical (11.9%); sales and service N.E.C. (7.6%), and professionals in natural and applied sciences (4.9%).
- Between 2006 and 2007, the three fastest growing occupations of Peel residents were: managers in retail trade, food and accommodation services (31% increase); retail salespersons and sales clerks (23% increase); and professional occupations in natural and applied sciences (19% increase).
