Health Care

Pregnant woman and a doctor

Canada has a high quality health care system that is funded by the government.

In Peel Region, everyone has access to a wide variety of health resources and services available, many of their costs covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) . These include hospitals , community health centres , walk-in clinics , family doctors , dental services , mental health , emergency services and more.

First 90 Days in Canada

Your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) will become effective about 3 months after you move to Ontario.

It is important to make sure your family is insured during this waiting period in case you need medical attention. You should buy private health insurance within 5 days of arriving in Ontario. It is important to get this insurance right away. You may not be approved for coverage if you apply for private insurance 5 days or more after your arrival. You should buy private insurance specifically for immigrating families, not for visiting or vacationing.

Call the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc. at 1-800-268-8099 for more information about private insurance.

Once you have lived in Ontario for 3 months, you will be eligible for OHIP.
