Garbage and Recycling

Blue recycle bin and green compost bin

In Peel region, garbage and recyclables are collected once every week. The municipal government provides every household with the following free items:

  • Blue box for paper/plastics
  • Green bin for food waste

The remaining garbage must be placed in black garbage bags that you can buy at grocery stores.

There is a limit of 2 bags per household that can be placed at the curbside for free. Each area has a garbage collection schedule and you must follow the waste management guidelines to have your garbage picked up.

In January 2016, Peel residents who currently receive curbside collection services (not including multi-residential/apartments) will be moving to bi-weekly, cart-based collection which means:

  • Garbage and recycling will be picked up every other week vs. weekly (organics will continue to be picked up weekly)
  • The majority of residents will be shifting to carts (from bags and bins)
